Tungsten-halogen lamps
Halogen lamps are in.
The brilliant light of halogen lamps has a much higher luminous intensity than ordinary light bulbs. Things simply look better in it.
Some halogen lamps are more than 100 % brighter than ordinary light bulbs. They give surfaces a scintillating shine and provide an enchanting effect as the spectral colours shimmer in the reflectors. No wonder that halogen lamps are so popular among interior designers. Because the lamps are so compact and because there is such a wide variety, from narrow spotlights to wall washers, they offer enormous scope for creative lighting. They also last up to five times as long as conventional incandescent lamps.
Halogen lamps are moving into more and more applications. They are regularly in use for example at trade fairs and exhibitions, in shops, offices and hotels and now increasingly in the home.

Innovative light for a clear view of things
The IRC principle in detail.
The secret of the innovative IRC halogen lamp from OSRAM lies in the principle of thermal recovery. The special infra-red coating (IRC) on the inside of the bulb reflects the heat back to the filament, so the heat remains inside the lamp. This means that less energy has to be supplied from outside to bring the filament up to its operating temperature. Luminous efficacy is increased as a result, and further improved by the xenon gas filling. You can work out exactly how much you can save with our easy-to-use IRC ENE RGY SAVER analysis tool, which you can find on the internet (www.osram.com/irc).
Bulb pinch technology.
Bulb pinch technology is a completely new process for manufacturing mains voltage halogen lamps. A thin and extremely sensitive filament wire is fixed directly in the bulb by glass knobs. This gives the lamp a higher life expectancy - even if exposed to vibrations or jolts. An integrated fuse system ensures that the lamp is safely switched off when it comes to the end of its life. Our lamp can therefore also be used in unshielded luminaires (in accordance with IEC 60598).
Low-pressure technolog y.
In the bulb of a conventional halogen lamp the operating pressure may be as high as 25 bar. The operating pressure of a lowpressure halogen lamp on the other hand is no more than 2.5 bar. For this reason the OSRAM low-pressure lamps are approved for use in unshielded luminaires in accordance with IEC 60598. Because of the different pressures there are different gas flow conditions in the bulbs of the halogen lamps. Whereas there are strong convection currents in a high-pressure lamp, heat and gases in the low-pressure lamp are moved by uniform and calm diffusion. There are further benefits as a result:
- The luminous flux is more constant throughout the life of the lamp
- The premature failure rate is greatly reduced
- Power losses through the filler gas are reduced
UV FILTER as standard.
OSRAM is the first lamp manufacturer to commit fully to UV FILTER technology. The doped quartz (in other words, enriched with UV-absorbent materials) used for the bulb prevents unwanted UV components from being emitted in the light. This applies in particular to harmful high-energy UV-C and UV-B radi ation. Low-energy and therefore less harmful UV-A radiation is reduced by half. The benefits:
- Easily complies with the strictest UV protection thresholds
- Reduced UV-related bleaching effect
